But how different people have conceived of death and how those conceptions have shaped their behaviors and practices has varied over time and across cultures. Enduring Understanding: Through art, people have expressed attitudes toward death that are in some respects universal, while in others personally and culturally specific. They have, moreover, used a wide range of objects, images, and structures to negotiate the processes of aging and dying, grieving, and commemorating. Essential Questions: Can art uncover a lighter side of death? How has art been used as a guide to death and dying? How can art about death tell us about life? How can art make the absent present? What do funerary arts reveal about cultural beliefs and values? The Design Problem: Create a theme-related artwork using the design process documented in Process Portfolio (PP) Participate in oral critique and written reflection about final piece as connected to theme. Watch ATT video. Groups of 3 create lists: identify different art-making forms, identify cultures/regions, identify artists.
